You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second reassembles it. You must love your neighbor as yourself.
Again the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls, when he finds one of great value he goes and sells everything and buys it.
For every unfounded word men utter they will answer on judgement day.
Come to me all you who are overburdened and I will give you rest.
Always treat others as you would like them to treat you. That is the meaning of the Law and of the prophets.
The lamp of the body is the eye. It follows that if your eye is sound your whole body will be filled with light. But if your eye is diseased your whole body will be all darkness. If then the light inside you is darkness, what darkness that will be. Chapter 6, Verses 22-23
Anyone who prefers father or mother to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who prefers son or daughter to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who finds his life will lose it. Anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.
I tell you solemnly it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. When the disciples were astonished. Who can be saved, then? They said. Jesus gazed at them. "For men" he told them "this is impossible. For God everything is possible."
It was the stone rejected by the builders that became the keystone. This was the Lord's doing and it is wonderful to see.
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together and to disconcert him one of them put the question. Master which is the greatest commandment of the Law? Jesus said, you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it; you must love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets also.
Anyone who exalts himself will be humbled and anyone who humbles himself will be exalted.
Come to me all you who labor and are overburdened and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. Yes my yoke is easy and my burden light.
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt becomes tasteless what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men."
You are the light of the world. A city built on a hilltop cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub. They put it on a lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men so that seeing your good works they may give praise to your Father in heaven. (Mt 5, 13-16)
Do not judge and you will not be judged. Because the judgements you give are the judgements you will get, and the amount you measure out is the amount you will be given. Why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the plank in your own? How dare you say to your brother - let me take the splinter out of your eye, when all the time there is a plank in your own? Hypocrite. Take the plank out of your own eye first and then you will see clearly enough to take the splinter out of your brother's eye.
All you need say is yes if you mean yes. No if you mean no. Anything more than this comes from the evil one.
Can any of you for all his worrying add one single cubit to his life span?
That is why I am telling you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your body and how you are to clothe it. Surely life means more than food and the body more than clothing. Look at the birds of the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns. Yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth more than they are?
So do not worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Ask and it will be given to you, search and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened to you. For the one who asks always receives. And the one who searches always finds. The one who knocks always has the door opened to them. Is there a man among you who would hand his son a stone when he asks for bread? Or would hand him a snake when he asked for a fish? If you then who are evil know how to give your children what is good how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him.
But when you pray go to your private room and when you have shut the door pray to your father who is in that secret place and your father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.
You are the light of the world. A city built on a hilltop cannot be hidden. No one lights a light to put it under a tub. They put it on a lamp stand where it shines for all in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men so that seeing your good works they may give praise to your Father in heaven.
Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. In this way you will be sons of your Father in heaven. For he caused his sun to rise on bad men as well as good.
Do not store up treasures for yourself on earth, where moths and woodworms destroy them and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures for yourself in heaven where neither moth nor woodworms destroy them and thieves cannot break in and steal. For where your treasure is there will be your heart also.
If anyone wants to be a follower of mine let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.
At this time the disciples came to Jesus and said 'Who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?' So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said. I tell you solemnly unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."
That is why a man must leave father and mother and cling to his wife and the two become one body? They are no longer two, therefore, but one body. So then what God has united, man must not divide.
Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls in front of pigs, or they may trample them and turn on you and tear you to pieces.
Therefore everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house and it did not fall. It was founded on rock. But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act upon them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and struck that house and it fell and what a fall it had.
Set your hearts on his kingdom first, and on his righteousness and all these other things will be given you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow: tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Say Yes if you Mean Yes No if you Mean No
Again you have learnt how it was said to our ancestors. You must not break your oath but fulfil your oaths to the Lord. But I say to you do not swear at all, either by heaven, since that is God's throne, or by the earth since that is his footstool or by Jerusalem since that is the city of the great king. Do not swear by your own hair either since you cannot turn a single hair white or black. All you need say is Yes" if you mean yes, "No" if you mean no. Anything more than this comes from the evil one."
